SCHOOLS OUT – SUMMER AT IGLOOLIK, 18.5” x 27.5”, 1992
Igloolik is an Inuit hamlet in Foxe Basin, Qikiqtaaluk Region in Nunavut, northern Canada. The name "Igloolik" means "there is a house here". It derives from iglu, meaning house or building, and refers to the sod houses that were originally in the area, not snow igloos. The painting shows the anticipation on the faces of the children. This painting was done at a time when there were only several hundred Inuit who lived off the land at this location. I have always been fascinated by the Inuit people and culture, so I did a series of paintings from the archived slides I received.
