BLACK RIVER ICE CAVES, 24” x 48” 1992
This is a portrait of a swift and powerful predator, the black wolf. For centuries, the black wolf has been depicted in mythology and folklore as a creature of the shadows, half demon, half beast.
The Black River in Simcoe County flows south and west from Haliburton County to the Severn River near Washago near where I lived in Canada. The ice caves along the shores of the river were spectacular in the winters that were severe. The painting shows a wolf family present in one of the ice caves I photographed on a field trip.
