MANYARA WARRIOR , 30” x 48”, 1990
This lion was photographed in Lake Manyara Park in Tansania. Lake Manyara is a soda lake or ‘magadi’, that lies along the base of the Rift Escarpment. The east side of the lake lies in arid plain, while the west shore supports high, dark groundwater jungle. This great brute of a lion has just ambushed a fully grown cape buffalo, in a titanic struggle. He shows the marks of a warrior in the survival of the fittest. The painting was commissioned by a photographer who went on safari and captured this moment.
