SWILCAN BRIDGE, 12” x 16”
The painting depicts twilight over Swilcan Bridge at St. Andrew’s Golf Course in Scotland . I wanted this painting to have the dark brooding contrasts reminiscent of paintings in the renaissance. The stark contrast of light and dark, called ‘chiaroscuro’, is used to achieve a dramatic intensification of the image creating an atmospheric almost solemn mood. The muted illumination of the twilight sunset reflected in the water creates a sense of mystery, and the feeling that this unimposing structure is really just an ancient livestock bridge. In fact it is one of the most recognized cultural icons in the sport of golf and many of golf’s great champions pay homage to the sport by being photographed on the bridge.
