The multiple images below show the sequence I use to complete a painting. I start with a pencil sketch directly on my paint board or canvas. For most paintings I use paint board which is 1/4"masonite with Gesso sealant . For very large paintings I use canvas mounted on a wood frame to save weight. In this sequence you can see how I initially rough in the colors and then keep refining the shapes and colors adding more detail. I reserve the use of pure white and black for the elements of the painting that are closest to the viewer.
I basically use the primary colors for most of my paintings. These are: Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Yellow Oxide, Titanium White and Mars Black.
